This procedure involves the use of silicone gel under the chest muscles or breast tissue to increase the volume and fullness of the breasts.
Many people choose to have this type of surgery because they feel their breasts are too small or lack symmetry, and they want to enhance their overall body proportions.
Before you have breast enlargement surgery, you’ll be given general anaesthetic so that you’ll be asleep while the procedure is carried
out.
The procedure typically involves your surgeon creating a small incision (approximately 2-3 inches long) in the breast area, either in the
natural crease below it, around the areola, or in your armpit. They will then place the implants between your breast tissue and chest
muscle or behind your chest muscle, to achieve the desired size and shape.
Your surgeon will close the incisions to complete the operation, before covering them with a dressing. Depending on several factors, you may be able to return home the same day, or you may stay in hospital overnight.
At your consultation, your surgeon will assess your suitability for breast augmentation surgery. If you’re a suitable candidate and you
choose to go ahead, they’ll help you select the right size and type of implants to achieve your desired results and suit your body shape.
To be considered for any kind of surgical procedure, you should be over 18, be generally fit and healthy, and have realistic expectations
about what can be achieved from your operation.
People have breast enhancement surgery for a variety of reasons, including:
To aid your recovery, you should be prepared to take up to 2 weeks off work following your breast augmentation operation. However,
if the nature of your job is physically demanding, you might need to take more time off to rest and recover.
Driving should be avoided for at least a week after your breast enlargement, and you should avoid lifting heavy objects and strenuous exercise
for at least a month.
A week or two after your breast augmentation procedure, your stitches will have dissolved or will be removed. At around the 6-week
point, your scars should have begun to fade. You should also feel comfortable in carrying out your normal day-to-day activities.
Wearing a compression bra for at least 3 months is necessary for you to achieve your optimum results from treatment. Your surgeon
will guide you as to the length of time you should wear it based on your individual circumstances.

Although having breast augmentation does have the potential to affect the ability to breastfeed, many women with breast implants
are able to successfully breastfeed afterwards. The incision location and implant placement can impact this, so you should discuss your
plans with your surgeon before going ahead with the procedure.
Breast implants shouldn’t be considered lifetime devices, and they will need to be replaced at some point. This is generally between
10-15 years, although some people may go longer without issues. Routine check-ups with your surgeon are important to monitor the
condition of your implants.
Scarring is inevitable with any surgical procedure, but our specialist surgeons use techniques which help to minimise it. They will try to
place the incisions in areas that can be concealed by clothing or your natural contours.
Your surgeon will decide whether over-the-muscle implants, which sit in front of the breast muscle and give a fuller breast shape, is
right for you. There needs to be enough breast tissue to cover the implant, and so it is usually the option used with patients who have
naturally larger breasts.
In contrast, under-the-muscle implants sit behind the breast muscle to form a more natural breast shape, and this procedure is usually
recommended for very slim women or those who have smaller frames and don’t have a lot of natural breast tissue.
Following your breast enlargement operation, and as you begin to recover from your surgery, your breasts will start to settle and ‘drop’
so that they look more natural. The time it takes for this to happen can be anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months.
