Also known as breast revision surgery, breast re-augmentation is a surgical procedure which is carried out to replace existing breast implants with new ones.Â
Breast re-augmentation can be carried out for various reasons. Breast implants don’t last a lifetime, and so will have to be replaced at some point – this is generally between 10 and 20 years after the original procedure. Some patients may want a different look or feel because they’ve changed their mind about the size, shape or type of implants they have, so they upgrade or downsize their implants. Â
Age and lifestyle changes can change the appearance of breast implants, and so some people have re-augmentation to restore a younger or more natural appearance. And some patients have this procedure because of complications from the original procedure, such as implant rupture, capsular contracture (scar tissue forming around the implant), asymmetry or an incorrectly positioned implant.Â
How the procedure for breast re-augmentation is performed varies depending on the specific goals that you have and the issues that are being addressed. It might involve removing or replacing implants, reshaping breast tissue, adjusting the position of implants, or performing additional procedures like a breast lift (mastopexy) to achieve the desired outcome.Â
Before any kind of cosmetic surgery, it’s important that you understand what can realistically be achieved from your procedure. You should also be in good health generally.Â
If your implants have dropped or ‘bottomed out’, if your breasts are dimpled or rippled because of the implant, or if your implants have moved or rotated, breast re-augmentation could help enhance the cosmetic appearance of your breasts. Â
This type of procedure can also address complications with your original implants, such as capsular contraction, leaking or rupturing. Â
If you have decided that your implants are too large or too small and would like to change how your breasts look, a re-augmentation procedure could provide the answer.Â
Recovery from breast augmentation surgery can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the surgical technique used by the surgeon, the type of implants being used, individual healing capabilities, and the extent of the procedure.Â
After your surgery, it’s likely that you’ll have some bruising and swelling on your breasts and chest area. These could last up to 3 weeks. Â
You may experience tenderness and a sensation of tightness in your chest initially. Following the procedure, appropriate pain relief will be given to you to help with managing this.Â
While your breasts might initially appear elevated on your chest, over the initial 6-week post-surgery phase, they’ll undergo a settling process, moving into a more natural position and feeling softer. You should avoid immersing your incisions in water until they’ve fully healed.Â
It could take up to a year for you to see your final results. During this time, your wounds will continue to heal, and any scars will fade with time so that they’re less noticeable.Â

Yes, this is an option for you during breast re-augmentation. You can discuss your preferences with your surgeon at your consultation and they will help you understand your options and the best approach to take.Â
Breast re-augmentation can be more complex than the initial surgery due to factors like scar tissue, implant pocket adjustments, and potential complications from the previous surgery. However, our skilled surgeons have performed many breast re-augmentation procedures and so are very familiar with this type of surgery.Â
