Facelift Surgery in Detail

Our faces can often show signs of ageing quicker and more noticeably than other areas of our body. Having a facelift is a popular choice for our patients who want to eliminate sagging skin across their face, chin and jowls.

During the procedure, the underlying muscles are tightened and the skin is re-draped over the face for a tighter and more contoured result.

  • Can help you achieve a more youthful look
  • Might boost your self-confidence
  • Can return attention to facial features that might have been overshadowed by ageing
  • Results in a more contoured and defined face
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Asymmetry
  • Hair loss at incision site
  • Nerve damage
  • Changes in sensation
  • Scarring

Facelift surgery is typically performed under general anaesthetic, meaning that you’ll be asleep during the entire procedure.

Once you’re asleep, your surgeon will begin. There are a few different types of facelift available, so the exact technique that your surgeon uses will depend on which kind they recommend for you.

For a traditional facelift, the incisions are made within your hairline at your temples, extending down and finishing behind your ears. Once the incisions have been made, your surgeon will target the excess skin and fat before tightening the muscles beneath. Once these changes have been made, your surgeon will reposition the skin over your face to be more contoured and firm. If you’re also having a neck lift, your surgeon will repeat the process in the neck area with incisions made at the front of your earlobes and under your chin.

The whole procedure can take around 2 hours to complete.

You might decide to have a facelift to eliminate sagging skin and deep wrinkles on your face. The best candidates for facelift surgery are those who are in theirs 40s, 50s or 60s with visible signs of ageing but reasonable skin elasticity.

If you’re at a younger age than this, it’s worth noting that a facelift might not be as effective, as it can’t prevent wrinkles or sagging from developing.

Following your facelift surgery, you should take around 2-3 weeks off work, although this depends on how physical your job is.

You’ll feel some discomfort and swelling for the first few days. Try to keep your head elevated while resting and take suitable pain medication to help manage this pain and swelling.

It’s important that you avoid certain activities while you recover, including showering, saunas or anything that will get your bandages wet in the first 2 weeks. Exercise and heavy lifting will need to be avoided for at least 4 weeks.

You should wear your medical-grade compression garment for as long as advised by your surgeon, as this will help you to get the best out of your results. It can take up to 6 months for your final results to become visible.

Facelift FAQ's

You can expect the results of your facelift to last around 10-15 years. The results aren’t permanent as they can be affected by the ageing process.

While there is no upper age limit for facelift surgery, most people benefit from the procedure in their 40s, 50s or 60s. At this age, you might have some visible signs of ageing but enough skin elasticity for a facelift to be effective.

During your consultation, your surgeon will thoroughly assess your skin to determine whether now is the right time for you to have a facelift.

Facelift surgery involves incisions, which will leave scars. As the incisions are made within your hairline, they will be concealed and so any scarring will be hidden. They will also fade over time, and you can help to improve their appearance by protecting them from the sun and using Vitamin E cream to keep them soft.

There are different types of facelift, and the right one for you depends on your skin and what you hope to achieve from surgery. Types of facelift include:

  • Deep plane (SMAS): This moves and lifts the skin and muscle as one unit, focusing on the deep facial tissue
  • Mini facelift: Targets the lower part of the face, including the jowls and chin
  • Mid facelift: Focuses on the cheeks, removing excess skin from the middle of the face.

Anti-wrinkle injections and facial peels can be a temporary, non-surgical alternative to a facelift, but they only target fine lines and wrinkles on the skin’s surface. They might work for you if you’re under 40 years old and simply want to minimise fine lines and wrinkles.
