A gastric band could help you lose weight, but in some cases it loses its effectiveness or causes problems after a while. In these circumstances, it can be converted to another type of weight loss procedure.
A gastric band to gastric sleeve conversion could help you achieve the weight loss that you weren’t able to with gastric band. It could also help alleviate symptoms such as band slippage or heartburn caused by the gastric band.
You’ll be given general anaesthetic for your gastric band to sleeve surgery, meaning that you’ll be asleep throughout the procedure.
Your surgeon will begin by making small incisions in your abdomen to remove the gastric band and its port. Once the band has been removed, they will move on to the gastric sleeve part of the operation.
To perform the gastric sleeve, they will remove a large portion of your stomach to reduce its capacity for food. Next, they’ll shape what’s left of your stomach into a ‘sleeve’ shape. To complete the surgery, they will close the incisions and you’ll be taken to the recovery room to come around from the anaesthetic.
If you’ve had a gastric band for a while and find that it’s causing you discomfort, or if you haven’t achieved the weight loss you’d hoped for, you might consider converting it to a gastric sleeve.
Gastric sleeve surgery could result in a more significant and sustainable weight loss for you, although it depends on how successful you are at following your post-surgery diet and exercise.
After your gastric band to sleeve surgery, you’ll need to take at least 1 week off from work, although this might be more if your job is particularly physical.
For the first few days, you’ll feel a bit swollen and uncomfortable. Suitable painkillers should help with this, as well as following your surgeon’s aftercare advice.
We’ll give you detailed instructions on what you should eat and what to avoid following your surgery. The post-surgery diet will consist of liquids-only for the first 2 weeks before you can move onto soft and pureed food before eventually reintroducing solids.
It can take up to 6 weeks for you to get back to your normal routine and start incorporating vigorous exercise into your lifestyle.

This procedure is considered to be permanent as it removes a large portion of your stomach. It should mean that you’re able to reach your weight loss goals and keep the excess weight off, provided you stick to your healthy post-surgery lifestyle.
When you meet with your dedicated nutritional expert, they’ll explain the post-surgery diet to you in detail. They will also help you come up with your own personalised diet plan to follow in the weeks after your surgery to ensure that you get the nutrients you need.
Typically, the gastric sleeve post-surgery diet lasts around 4 weeks and progresses from liquids to pureed and soft food before you can eat solids again.
There are variations of the gastric sleeve procedure, including partial and total. Total gastrectomy is the type that is used for weight loss surgery, removing most of your stomach. Partial gastrectomy removes only a small section of your stomach.
