Staying at a healthy weight can be a lifelong battle for some people. In this case, gastric sleeve surgery could be a solution.
A type of bariatric (weight loss) procedure, it involves removing a portion of your stomach to restrict how much food you can eat. This results in a sustainable weight loss that could transform your appearance and lifestyle.
Before your surgeon begins the procedure, you’ll be given general anaesthetic to ensure that you stay asleep throughout the surgery.
Once you’re asleep, your surgeon will make 3-5 small incisions in the upper part of your abdomen. Through these incisions, they will insert a laparoscope (a tiny camera so that they can see the area around your stomach) and surgical instruments to remove part of your stomach. Once the correct amount has been removed, they will join together what remains to create the ‘sleeve’.
Gastric sleeve surgery can take up to 2 hours to complete.
You might decide to have weight loss surgery if you’ve struggled to maintain a healthy weight for a while. To be suitable for gastric sleeve surgery, you should come under the following criteria:
Once you’ve had your gastric sleeve surgery and have come round from the anaesthetic, you might be able to go home to recover, or we might want to monitor you overnight.
When you do go home to recover, you’ll need to take it easy and rest for the first few days. You’ll feel a bit swollen and uncomfortable, and should take around 1-2 weeks off work.
We’ll give you specific advice on your post-op diet, which will consist of liquids-only for the first 2 weeks before progressing to soft and pureed food.
After 6 weeks, you should be able to return to your normal routine and should begin to incorporate exercise to support your weight loss.
Our Patient Advocate will guide you to a suitable surgeon for a video consultation or face-to-face consultation. Should you choose to move forward, we will arrange a pre-surgery meeting, depending on your medical history.
Being in good health is vital for surgery. We’ll arrange a pre-surgery check with our nurses to ensure you’re ready and right for the procedure.
On your surgery day at SUR, we’ll ensure your comfort as we prepare. Your procedure will occur in a surgical theatre, afterwards, you’ll rest in a recovery area or room. Once you’re recovering well, you can head home.
At SUR, we prioritise outstanding aftercare. After your procedure, we’ll support you throughout. We’ll schedule check-ins to track your recovery, and our Patient Advocate is on hand for any post-operative guidance.

The procedure removes a portion of your stomach, leaving it around 2-3 ounces post-op. This is around 60-90mls in volume.
A gastric sleeve isn’t easy to reverse as it involves changing the shape of the stomach. If your gastric sleeve is causing you serious problems or is no longer helping you maintain your weight, it can be converted into another type of weight loss procedure.
It is possible to regain weight with a gastric sleeve. However, if you stick to your diet plan and exercise regularly, you should be able to maintain your weight loss. If you need any assistance with your diet and lifestyle changes, our team of experts is here to help at any time.
There are some differences between gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery, but the main one is the way in which your stomach is changed.
Gastric sleeve surgery removes a portion of the stomach, whereas during a gastric bypass a small pouch is created from the stomach, and the small bowel is rerouted.
