Labiaplasty, also known as labia reduction, is a surgical procedure which involves reshaping or reducing the size of the labia minora, which are the inner folds of the vulva. It’s a popular procedure that’s typically carried out for cosmetic reasons, or to address discomfort or pain. Large, uncomfortable or even painful labia can lead to you feeling self-conscious and affect how you live your life, but this surgery can help you regain your confidence and make activities more comfortable. Â
Before the surgery itself begins, you’ll be given local anaesthesia (with or without sedation), or in some cases, general anaesthesia. This will ensure you’re comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. Your labia will be cleaned, and your pubic area shaved so that you’re ready for surgery.Â
To begin the operation, your surgeon will make incisions along your labia minora and reshape it by removing or trimming the excess tissue. This is done to achieve the desired size and symmetry while still preserving the natural contours. The type of incision and the technique that your surgeon will use may vary, based on your specific needs. Â
To complete the surgery, the incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures or stitches which typically dissolve on their own over time and don’t need to be removed.Â
If you don’t like the size or shape of your labia minora, a labiaplasty could provide the answer. People may choose to have labiaplasty surgery for many reasons, such as experiencing pain, having cosmetic concerns, or wanting to improve their sex life. Â
There’s no standard shape or size of genitalia, and what’s ‘normal’ is different from one person to the next. However, if you feel that your labia are too large, asymmetrical, or protrude too much and it’s making you unhappy or self-conscious, then surgery might be the right option for you. Enlarged or elongated labia minora can cause discomfort or pain during exercise, when wearing certain clothes or when having sex. And larger labia can be challenging to maintaining proper hygiene. By reducing the size of the labia, vaginoplasty can help.
As you’ll feel sore from your operation afterwards, you won’t be able to drive and should ensure that you have arranged for someone to take you home. Â
After surgery, you’ll be sore and swollen for a few days, which will normally settle completely after 1-2 weeks. Any pain can be managed by taking painkillers. You’ll need to give your body plenty of time to heal and should take a week off work to get your recovery off to the best start. Â
Remember to keep the area clean and wear loose underwear and clothes which will prevent rubbing. Use sanitary towels instead of tampons for a few weeks. After 2-3 weeks, you should start to see and feel the results of your labiaplasty. Â

Between 3 to 6 months after your operation, you should begin to have a clearer idea of the final appearance of your labia. Scarring should continue to improve, and any residual swelling or changes in sensation should be minimal. However, the full healing process can take up to a year or more. Â
At this point, the scars should be well-healed and relatively inconspicuous, and you will have a good sense of the final results. It’s essential to keep in mind, though, that individual healing experiences can vary, and the timeline for seeing your final outcome from surgery can be influenced by factors such as your body’s natural healing process, the surgical technique used, and how well you follow your post-operative care instructions.Â
How a labiaplasty impacts sexual sensation and comfort can vary from person to person. For example, some people find their comfort during sexual intercourse is improved after the procedure, especially if they experienced discomfort or pain before due to enlarged or elongated labia.Â
However, you should be aware that temporary changes in sensitivity or discomfort are possible immediately after the surgery as your body heals and it may take some time for the surgical area to fully recover. To minimise the risk of discomfort during sex after labiaplasty, it’s essential to follow your post-operative instructions carefully and allow sufficient time for healing. Â
Everyone’s experience is unique, and knowing precisely how labiaplasty will affect your sexual experience isn’t easy. Speak to your surgeon at your consultation to help understand what you might expect after your surgery.Â
Labiaplasty does typically provide long-lasting results, but factors like ageing and pregnancy can affect the appearance of the labia as time passes. It’s important to have realistic expectations about what will happen over the longer term, and speak with your surgeon about what changes may occur.Â
