Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses suction to sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat deposits from areas like the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms and neck. Liposuction isn’t a weight loss procedure, but targets areas with excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.Â
Liposuction is also known as lipoplasty and body contouring. It could help if you have excess body fat in specific places, but otherwise have a stable body weight, as it lowers the number of fat cells in a specific area. Liposuction typically results in a permanent change in body shape, so as long as you’re able to maintain your weight. If you have some areas of the body where stubborn pockets of fat have proved resistant to a healthy diet and exercise, liposuction could be the answer. Â
During the consultation process, we’ll explain to you in detail what will happen during your liposuction surgery. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will begin by injecting the targeted area with a solution containing local anaesthetic, which will numb it and help to reduce any bruising and swelling. They’ll then make small incisions in the area being targeted, before inserting a thin tube (a cannula) which is attached to a suction machineÂ
By moving the cannula back and forth, your surgeon loosens the fat and then vacuums it out to remove it. They’ll then drain any excess fluid, and suture and bandage the area.Â
Liposuction can target specific areas where stubborn pockets of fat are proving resistant to diet and exercise. It can refine your body contours and improve your proportions to create a better overall balance. If you’ve lost a lot of weight, liposuction can remove residual fat deposits and excess skin. As a result of these benefits, liposuction can also improve your self-confidence.Â
It’ll take around 6 weeks for you to be fully recovered from your liposuction procedure. It’s usual to have some pain, swelling and bruising afterwards, and taking painkillers will help. Â
Avoid all kinds of exercise for at least the first week, and you may need to take a few days off work – this will depend on the nature of your job. Don’t do too much too soon, as it can take some weeks before you’re able to restart some of your usual activities. Â
At the 2-week point, light exercise can be resumed, progressing to more intense exercise and activities after 3 weeks. At the 4 to 6 week stage, you’ll be able to return to your normal daily activities and lift heavy objects.Â
The swelling after liposuction usually goes away within a few weeks, although it can take 6 months for it to settle completely and your final results to be apparent.Â

Liposuction only removes excess fat from the abdomen area, whereas a tummy tuck removes not just excess fat but also excess skin. It also repairs the abdominal muscles. Your surgeon will be able to advise you as to which procedure will best address your concerns, but a tummy tuck could be a better solution if your excess skin has been caused by losing a significant amount of weight or because of pregnancy.Â
Liposuction removes deeper fat, but it doesn’t improve the appearance of cellulite dimpling in the skin.Â
If you’re able to maintain your weight, the results from liposuction are permanent. If you gain substantial weight, however, new fat can accumulate.Â
Liposuction does leave small scars from the incision sites, but these are typically minimal and will fade over time. Â
Yes, there are a number of different types. The most popular are traditional or tumescent liposuction, where the area is injected with a solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine before fat is removed via a cannula and suction, and Vaser liposuction, which uses sound waves to break up fat. Â
