An alternative to the traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, this weight loss procedure is considered to be a simpler and less invasive weight loss tool. Also called one anastomosis or single anastomosis bypass, it could help you lose excess weight and keep it off in the long-term.
Before the surgery begins, you’ll be treated with general anaesthetic. This ensures that you’re asleep throughout the whole operation.
When your surgeon is ready to begin, they’ll start by making a few small incisions in your upper abdomen. They will then insert a small camera attached to a long, thin tube so that they can see the inside of your stomach.
The next step involves dividing your stomach with a surgical tool called a laparoscopic stapler to create a smaller ‘tube’ shaped stomach. This section is where eaten food will go. To complete the procedure, your surgeon will loop a section of your bowel (around 150cm) and join it to the lower part of your new ‘tube’ stomach. This allows food to pass from the stomach into the small bowel, bypass much of it and therefore you’ll absorb fewer calories from food.
The whole procedure can take around 2 hours to complete.
Many of our patients select weight loss surgery as a final measure to take control of their weight. Mini gastric bypass is an option that can be just as effective as a traditional gastric bypass, but is less invasive.
You might decide to have this procedure if you’ve struggled with your weight for a while and it’s affecting your quality of life. Having the mini gastric bypass could help you gain confidence, become healthier and live a more active lifestyle.
After your mini gastric bypass surgery, you’ll need to take at least 1 week off of work, as you should try to rest during this time.
You’ll feel uncomfortable and delicate for the first few days, and should try to rest but make sure to get up and walk a little bit at regular intervals. You’ll feel more tired than usual as your body adapts to your new digestive system, but your energy will start to come back after the first few weeks.
We’ll give you all the instructions and advice you need to follow your post-surgery diet. This diet typically begins with liquids for the first 2 weeks before progressing on to pureed and soft foods before you can reintroduce solids.
Our Patient Advocate will guide you to a suitable surgeon for a video consultation or face-to-face consultation. Should you choose to move forward, we will arrange a pre-surgery meeting, depending on your medical history.

A mini gastric bypass could help you lose excess weight and therefore improve your general health. Losing weight can have many benefits, including the resolution of obesity-related conditions including type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, cardiovascular disease and sleep apnoea. It can also make exercise and other physical activity easier and reduce pressure on your weight-bearing joints.
The extent of your weight loss will depend on several factors, including your starting weight, sex, and of course how well you stick to your post-surgery lifestyle.
Both mini and traditional gastric bypass surgery restrict how much you’re able to eat and reduce the number of calories absorbed by your body. This can help you lose weight and keep it off. According to the United Kingdom National Bariatric Surgery Registry, both types of gastric bypass could help you lose up to 72%* of excess weight after surgery.

As the mini bypass surgery is less invasive than traditional gastric bypass surgery, it is possible to reverse the procedure. A mini gastric bypass doesn’t remove any of your stomach, and so it’s possible to return the stomach to its original size.
