Having protruding ears or ears that are oversized can affect your confidence. This is where otoplasty, also known as ear reshaping surgery, could help. Â
Depending on your surgeon’s recommendation and the extent of your surgery, you’ll be given either general or local anaesthetic before your procedure.Â
The exact nature of your surgery depends on which type of ear reshaping you’re having:Â
PinnaplastyÂ
This procedure ‘pins’ back ears that stick out too far. Your surgeon makes an incision at the back of your ear before removing some skin from the cartilage. The cartilage is then reshaped to make the ear sit closer to your head.Â
Ear reductionÂ
In this type of otoplasty, your surgeon removes excess skin and cartilage to make the ear smaller.Â
 Ear correctionÂ
Ear correction refers to a type of ear reshaping that can correct deformities or injury. An example of this would be ‘cauliflower ear’ correction, in which the skin at the front of the ear is lifted and the thickened tissue reduced.Â
There are varying reasons why you might decide to have otoplasty, including:Â
It’s important that you’re in generally good health and have realistic expectations of the results when you have otoplasty.Â
You’ll need to take a few days to a week off of work after your otoplasty. Your ears will feel tender and possibly numb for the first few days.Â
You’ll need to wear a compression garment for a few days, and once this is off you can begin to get back to work and light exercise. It can take up to 6 weeks to fully recovery, and 3 months for any swelling to disappear completely.Â
Our Patient Advocate will guide you to a suitable surgeon for a video consultation or face-to-face consultation. Should you choose to move forward, we will arrange a pre-surgery meeting, depending on your medical history.
Being in good health is vital for surgery. We’ll arrange a pre-surgery check with our nurses to ensure you’re ready and right for the procedure.
On your surgery day at SUR, we’ll ensure your comfort as we prepare. Your procedure will occur in a surgical theatre, afterwards, you’ll rest in a recovery area or room. Once you’re recovering well, you can head home.
At SUR, we prioritise outstanding aftercare. After your procedure, we’ll support you throughout. We’ll schedule check-ins to track your recovery, and our Patient Advocate is on hand for any post-operative guidance.

As otoplasty only focuses on the outside of your ears, and so it shouldn’t affect your hearing.Â
Incisions are used in otoplasty, but they are typically placed behind the ears, meaning that the scars will be well concealed within the folds of skin.Â
The right time for you will depend on when you feel that you’re ready to have surgery. In general, you should be fit and healthy and able to take a few days off work to recover.Â
