Penile implant surgery involves a device inserted into the penis to enable controlled erections. There are 2 types of penile implant; inflatable and semi-rigid.
Inflatable penile implants are inflatable cylinders which are inserted into the penis. A fluid-filled reservoir is placed in the abdomen, and a pump in the scrotum. This allows the implant to be inflated to create an erection, and deflated when necessary.
With a semi-rigid implant, bendable rods are inserted into the penis to ensure that it remains firm at all times.
Penile implant surgery can transform your life, offering benefits such as:
Restored ability to achieve an erection
Improved self-esteem and confidence
Increased satisfaction with your sexual life
A solution that feels and looks natural
As with any surgery, penile implant procedures carry risks:
Infection
Implant problems such as malfunction
Erosion through the skin
Pain or discomfort
Changes in penis sensation or appearance
The surgery involves the insertion of the implant through an incision in the penis or scrotum. The type of implant chosen will depend on your specific case and preference. Inflatable implants involve a pump placed in the scrotum, whereas malleable rods can be manually adjusted.
Our expert urologists will guide you through deciding if penile implant surgery is suitable for you. We consider your medical history, the severity of your erectile dysfunction, and your personal preferences.
Recovery typically involves a short hospital stay followed by several weeks of healing at home. Most men can return to normal activities within 4-6 weeks and can resume sexual activity after the doctor’s approval.
